Kapil Sharma was born in Amritsar, in the Indian state of Punjab, on April 2, 1981. Jeetendra Kumar Punj, his father was a head constable in Punjab Police, and Janak Rani, his mother is a homemaker. Kapil Sharma has a sister named Pooja Pawan Devgan, and an elder brother named Ashok Kumar Sharma, who is in the police force.

In addition to attending D.A.V Public School in Amritsar, he graduated from Hindu College. When he was in 10th standard, he got his first job at a telephone booth to support himself. To cover his expenses, he even performed in night jagratas.

Several colleges recognized him and he was presented at youth festivals. As a teenager, he enrolled in Commercial Art and completed a degree in computer science.
